Berlin Overdose (January 2035)

The Berlin overdose was a near-fatal accidental fentanyl overdose experienced by Ezra Cruz in January 2035 while CRATB was touring in Berlin. Ezra took a pill in his hotel room after obtaining it at a club; a member of the band later found him unresponsive. Logan Weston performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation until emergency responders arrived. Ezra survived, was admitted to intensive care, and entered addiction treatment after the crisis.

Overview

Ezra was twenty-eight. Nadia was five months pregnant with Raffie, and Ezra’s fear of becoming a father had intensified an already dangerous period of alcohol and drug use. The pill he took was contaminated with fentanyl. The overdose, emergency response, intensive-care admission, Nadia’s hospital ultimatum, and later treatment became the central turning point in his recovery history.

Logan’s role in the rescue also produced a second medical crisis. After performing CPR and remaining through the hospital vigil, he developed severe hypoglycemia and lost consciousness in the intensive-care unit.

Medical Context and Lead-Up

Ezra’s substance use had escalated during the years after the 2029 Velvet Frame shooting and the end of his relationship with Nina. His father, Rafael Cruz, had died in an accidental fentanyl overdose in 2022. By January 2035, Ezra was also struggling with the impending birth of his first child and his fear that he would repeat Rafael’s failures.

Cisco Medina had spent years planning for Ezra’s habit of slipping away from his security detail. Cisco was not on duty in Berlin that night. Two members of the team whom he had trained were assigned to Ezra.

Onset and Recognition

Around 11:00 p.m. Berlin time, the two security-team members noticed that Ezra was becoming restless and agitated. Ezra told them that he was going to bed, then left through a service entrance. He joined a group going to a club, obtained the pill there, and returned alone to his hotel room.

Ezra took what he believed was a familiar pill. A member of the band later found him unresponsive and called for help. Logan was brought to the room while emergency services were contacted.

Emergency Response

Logan performed chest compressions for more than six minutes. The force required to sustain CPR broke one of Ezra’s ribs. Emergency responders assumed care and transported Ezra to a Berlin hospital, where he was intubated and admitted to intensive care.

Peter called Cisco in New York during the same overnight period. Peter was initially too distressed to give the sequence clearly, but told Cisco that Ezra was not breathing, Logan was performing CPR, and an ambulance was coming.

Acute Care Course

Ezra regained consciousness in intensive care with incomplete memory of the overdose and pain from the fractured rib. Peter remained at his bedside. Nadia arrived while five months pregnant and told Ezra, “You don’t get to die like him. Not you. Not now.” Ezra subsequently entered treatment.

Sophie, then in the early part of her pregnancy with Ellie, first supported Peter by telephone for nearly an hour. She and Carmen Rivera later traveled to the hospital. When Ezra woke and joked about Sophie bringing a baby to scold him, she answered, “You’re lucky I didn’t bring my full wrath.”

Charlie remained with Logan during the hospital vigil. After the exertion of CPR, prolonged stress, interrupted food intake, pain, and lack of rest, Logan developed shaking, sweating, visual changes, dizziness, and confusion before losing consciousness. His glucose was approximately 30–40 mg/dL when hospital staff treated him. Logan experienced severe hypoglycemia with loss of consciousness, but not a diabetic coma, and was admitted separately for monitoring.

Public and Media Response

Audio from the emergency call was leaked and circulated publicly. The recording captured members of the touring party calling for Logan, the CPR response, and the panic before emergency help arrived. Its release exposed both Ezra’s overdose and Logan’s role in the rescue without their consent.

Immediate Outcome

Ezra survived the overdose and began treatment for addiction. His recovery continued after Raffie’s birth in June 2035 and became part of his subsequent family, touring, and professional life.

The crisis also broke through Peter’s usual composure. Sophie spent nearly an hour on the phone with him, soothing him in English and Mandarin while he worked through the shock, before she and Carmen arrived in Berlin. Recognizing how deeply he loved Ezra as a brother changed his understanding of a relationship that had begun in distrust.

The security failure did not result from an absence of planning. Cisco’s team had recognized Ezra’s established warning signs, but Ezra had used a familiar exit route and convincingly presented himself as settled for the night. Cisco revised the detail after Berlin and hired Jared Dawkins and Manuel Torres in August 2035.

New York Family Aftermath

Sofia Medina, Cisco’s younger sister and a devoted fan of Ezra’s music, noticed Ezra’s absence and the abrupt change in the adults around her. Claudia explained in Spanish that Ezra was sick, that he was in the hospital, and that doctors were caring for him. Sofia cried repeatedly while he remained away.

After Ezra returned to New York, Sofia reached for him and began crying before she was fully in his arms. She held on while he held her and sobbed into her hair. Ezra repeated, “Perdón, hermosita. Perdón.” The reunion became a defining moment in their chosen-family relationship.
